We sat down with Black Lights to plan the shoot, and their focus was primarily on the first track, "The Enemy" which we had to finish in time for a Fat Northerner Records release on 13th August 2012. The version of the video uploaded to the band's YouTube page had a tremendous reception upon release, having now had well over 7000 hits; four thousand of which were in the first four days!
The second two tracks, "In The Dark" and "Visions" were a change in tone from "The Enemy" and the audio was also recorded live on the day for both these tracks. I took the opportunity to experiment with RGrain (www.rgrain.com) and some new Color Grades in FCP-Color across all three tracks. Each of the final videos has a very different color grade, even though the lighting setup was fairly consistent throughout the day. I wanted to experiment and see just how far a scene can be pushed in different colour directions. I also wanted to make use of the RGrain plates I had recently purchased.
Some Director dude (with an awesome Star Trek T-Shirt) with Black Lights, getting ready to film their interview.
The interview with the band was also included as part of the commission so that both existing and new fans could get to know the band a little bit better. It was also a chance for the band to talk about the songs, how they came about, what lies in store for them in the future, and to also lark about and take the p*** out of each other as all bands should!
Combined with the actual performance recordings themselves, the interview was the final piece of the puzzle, and functions as an EPK (Electronic Press Kit), showcasing the band, their talent, and their passion for music.
All in all, though it was a long edit, I hope you find both the music and films worth all the effort the entire team put in. The band sound amazing (listen if you don't believe me) and I hope you enjoy the variation in colors across the different films. This was a blast from start to finish, and I'm sure we'll be hearing more from Black Lights soon.
